Publish or Pull It?

What responsibility comes with having an audience?

You are the editor for a fictional creator team preparing a campaign post. The post uses a real statistic from the scenario, but the graph scale exaggerates the change, a photo reveals private information in the background, and the source credit is missing. Decide what can be published, what must be revised and what should be pulled.

MISSION BRIEFING

LEARN

ACCURACY → PRIVACY → PUBLISH

Having an audience creates responsibility. Editors should ask whether the content is accurate, proportionate, attributed, accessible and respectful of privacy. A true statistic can still be presented misleadingly. A useful image can still expose private information. A strong editorial decision explains both the benefit of publishing and the reason a revision or removal may still be necessary.

01 · REFRESH · QUICK PREREQUISITE CHECK

Refresh: editorial decisions should check accuracy, proportionality, attribution, privacy and accessibility separately.

Sign-ups rise from 200 to 230. What is the percentage increase?

Having an audience creates responsibility. Editors should ask whether the content is accurate, proportionate, attributed, accessible and respectful of privacy. A true statistic can still be presented misleadingly. A useful image can still expose private information. 03 · TEACH · WHAT TO NOTICE

Apply publish/revise/pull decisions to creator content.Check data presentation, attribution, privacy and accessibility before publication.

04 · TEACH · CONNECT THE SKILLS

Explain unintended impact and audience responsibility.Use a counter-argument before making a final editorial judgement.

05 · WORKED EXAMPLE

Worked example: the 15% result is real, but a graph starting its axis at 195 exaggerates the visual change. A photo exposing private contact details should be pulled or edited before release. A video without captions can usually be revised rather than discarded.

06 · WE DO · GUIDED PRACTICE

Which asset needs the highest privacy intervention before publication?

Choose the strongest answer. You will get an explanation straight away.

07 · YOU TRY · INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

YOU TRY: Make PUBLISH / REVISE / PULL decisions for the statistic, graph, photo and video. Explain the highest-priority change and include one counter-argument for publishing quickly.

Write at least 25 words. This is about the learning, not personal information.

MISCONCEPTION

MISCONCEPTION: “Because the headline statistic is true, the campaign is ready to publish.” Other elements can still mislead, exclude people or expose private information.

HELP

HELP: Audit each asset separately under ACCURACY / PRIVACY / ACCESSIBILITY / ATTRIBUTION, then combine the results into an editorial decision.

STRETCH · OPTIONAL

STRETCH (optional): Rank the four editorial problems by urgency and defend your order using likely harm, reversibility and ease of repair.

SOURCE 1

Campaign data

The fictional campaign increased sign-ups from 200 to 230, a 15% increase.
SOURCE 2

Graph issue

The draft chart starts its vertical axis at 195, making the 30-person increase look much larger than it is.
SOURCE 3

Privacy issue

A background noticeboard in the fictional photo shows a student surname and contact detail.
SOURCE 4

Accessibility issue

The draft video has spoken information but no captions or transcript.

INVESTIGATE + ENGLISH · EVIDENCE CASE

Publishing is a decision, not just a button

The fictional campaign has a genuine result: sign-ups increased from 200 to 230, which is 15%. That result can be communicated accurately. However, the draft graphic uses a narrow vertical axis that exaggerates the visual size of the increase. The photo also contains private information in the background, and the video has no captions. An editor does not need to discard the whole campaign, but they do need to fix problems that could mislead, exclude or expose people.

MAKE THE CALL

Audit the fictional campaign asset by asset. Mark each item PUBLISH, REVISE or PULL and explain which change has the highest priority before release.

BUILD YOUR CASE CONCLUSION1. Make the call. 2. Use at least two relevant pieces of evidence. 3. Explain one limitation or uncertainty. 4. Finish with what can responsibly be concluded.Strong structure: My judgement is… The strongest evidence is… However, we still do not know… Therefore…

CASE CONCLUSION: Write 180–250 words as the editor. Make a publish/revise/pull decision for the fictional campaign. Include the 15% increase, explain the graph problem, identify the privacy and accessibility issues, include one counter-argument for publishing quickly, and finish with a justified editorial decision.

0/180 words minimum for this writing mission.
