Reality Check: Case Closed

Can you make a judgement under uncertainty?

CASE CLOSED: A fictional youth-tech programme is being praised, criticised and promoted at the same time. An AI recommendation system boosted enrolments, a creator campaign used selective statistics, a budget report shows real savings, and a wellbeing survey has a weak sample. Your job is not to pick a side. Your job is to make the most defensible judgement under uncertainty.

YOU NEED
  • Required: a device with this page open.
  • Optional: headphones for video or read-aloud.
  • Optional: pen + paper for rough working if that helps you think.
HOW TO DO IT
  1. Read or listen to the Briefing + Learn.
  2. Do the interactive mission.
  3. Use facts from the reading and maths parts.
  4. Make your choice and save your project step.
  5. Play the weekly game. Finish Check-in.
WORK YOUR WAY

Short bursts are fine. Use Learning Tools for easier reading, read-aloud, less on screen, stronger contrast, no-rush and quieter-screen options.

If you get stuck, look at the example and try again.

MISSION BRIEFING

CASE CLOSED: A fictional youth-tech programme is being praised, criticised and promoted at the same time. An AI recommendation system boosted enrolments, a creator campaign used selective statistics, a budget report shows real savings, and a wellbeing survey has a weak sample. Your job is not to pick a side. Your job is to make the most defensible judgement under uncertainty.

✓Integrate media, algorithm, finance, wellbeing and safety evidence in one case.
✓Distinguish fact, interpretation, correlation and unsupported causal claims.
✓Use percentage change and sample limitations correctly.
✓Write a sustained judgement with counterpoint, limitation and qualified conclusion.
INTERACTIVE LEARN MODE

No passive video this week.

This mission is deliberately built around its simulator, investigation, decision room or prototype instead of an external video.

LEARN

ESTABLISHED → PLAUSIBLE → UNCERTAIN

Complex decisions often involve several partly true claims. Treat each claim separately, test the mechanism and the numbers, then bring the pieces together. A good final judgement states what is established, what is plausible, what remains uncertain and what evidence would change the conclusion. Counterpoints strengthen reasoning when they are answered rather than ignored.

LEARNING BUILD

Learn. Try. Check.

Look at the example. Try it yourself. Need help? Open a hint.

01 · REFRESH · QUICK PREREQUISITE CHECK

Refresh: correlation means two changes occur together; causation requires evidence that one change produced the other and that plausible alternatives have been addressed.

A creator campaign and an algorithm change begin in the same month that enrolments rise. What can the timing alone establish?

Choose an answer to reactivate the idea you need for this week.

02 · TEACH · CORE IDEA

Complex decisions often involve several partly true claims. Treat each claim separately, test the mechanism and the numbers, then bring the pieces together. A good final judgement states what is established, what is plausible, what remains uncertain and what evidence would change the conclusion. Counterpoints strengthen reasoning when they are answered rather than ignored.

03 · TEACH · WHAT TO NOTICE

Integrate media, algorithm, finance, wellbeing and safety evidence in one case.Distinguish fact, interpretation, correlation and unsupported causal claims.

04 · TEACH · CONNECT THE SKILLS

Use percentage change and sample limitations correctly.Write a sustained judgement with counterpoint, limitation and qualified conclusion.

05 · WORKED EXAMPLE

Worked example: enrolments rise 240 → 300, so (60 ÷ 240)×100 = 25%. Cost falls $52 → $46, so (6 ÷ 52)×100 ≈ 11.5% decrease. The wellbeing survey response rate is 48 ÷ 300 = 16%; 36 of 48 respondents were positive, but that cannot automatically represent all 300 participants.

06 · WE DO · GUIDED PRACTICE

Which judgement best fits “The AI recommendation system caused the enrolment increase”?

Choose the strongest answer. You will get an explanation straight away.

07 · YOU TRY · INDEPENDENT PRACTICE

YOU TRY: Write a four-part closing judgement: what is established, what is plausible, what is uncertain, and what new evidence would most change the conclusion. Include one counterpoint and one sample limitation.

Write at least 25 words. This is about the learning, not personal information.

MISCONCEPTION

MISCONCEPTION: “If outcome B happens after change A, A caused B.” Sequence in time is necessary for many causal claims but is not enough by itself to rule out other explanations.

HELP

HELP: Separate each claim. Calculate first, then label EVIDENCE / LIMIT / ALTERNATIVE EXPLANATION / JUDGEMENT.

STRETCH · OPTIONAL

STRETCH (optional): Sketch a comparison or test that could better isolate the recommendation-system change from the creator campaign. Name one ethical or practical limitation.

CASE-CLOSING BOARD

What is established, plausible or uncertain?

Treat each claim separately. Growth, cost, wellbeing and cause do not all have the same level of support.

JUDGEMENT 1

Enrolments increased after the changes.

JUDGEMENT 2

The AI recommendation system caused the enrolment increase.

JUDGEMENT 3

Average delivery cost per participant decreased.

JUDGEMENT 4

The programme worked better for every participant.

EVIDENCE THAT WOULD CHANGE THE JUDGEMENT

Which extra evidence would best test whether the AI system caused the enrolment increase?

OPEN ALL CASE EVIDENCE
SOURCE 1

Enrolment data

Fictional programme enrolments rose from 240 to 300 after a recommendation-system change and creator campaign launched in the same month.
SOURCE 2

Budget report

Average delivery cost per participant fell from $52 to $46 during the fictional programme period.
SOURCE 3

Wellbeing survey

48 of 300 participants answered an optional survey; 36 reported a positive experience, 8 neutral and 4 negative.
SOURCE 4

Creator claim

A sponsored post says the AI system “caused the programme to work better for everyone”. No evidence isolates AI as the cause of the outcomes.

INVESTIGATE + ENGLISH · EVIDENCE CASE

Several things can be true at once

The fictional programme gained 60 enrolments, rising from 240 to 300, while both a recommendation-system change and a creator campaign began at the same time. The data show growth, but they do not isolate which change caused it. Average delivery cost fell from $52 to $46, which is a measurable financial improvement. The optional wellbeing survey looks positive among respondents, but only 48 of 300 participants answered it. A sponsored creator claims the AI system caused the programme to work better for everyone. That causal claim is stronger than the available evidence. A defensible conclusion can recognise growth and lower cost while remaining uncertain about cause and whole-group wellbeing.

MAKE THE CALL

Close the case with a four-part judgement: what is established, what is plausible, what is uncertain, and what evidence would most change your conclusion. Then present the final Reality Project and reflect on how your reasoning changed across the term.

BUILD YOUR CASE CONCLUSION1. Make the call. 2. Use at least two relevant pieces of evidence. 3. Explain one limitation or uncertainty. 4. Finish with what can responsibly be concluded.Strong structure: My judgement is… The strongest evidence is… However, we still do not know… Therefore…

CASE CONCLUSION: Write 230–320 words as the final investigator. Include the enrolment percentage increase, the cost percentage decrease, the wellbeing survey response rate, one counterpoint, at least two limitations, and a qualified final judgement. Explicitly separate correlation from causation.

0/230 words minimum for this writing mission.
