WORD LAB · MISSION 1 OF 7

Morpheme Mixer

Use meaningful word parts to unlock unfamiliar words.
WHAT AM I LEARNING?

I can use prefixes, base words and context to work out meaning.

Teach: A morpheme is a meaningful part of a word. A prefix comes before a base word and changes its meaning. Year 5 readers increasingly use more than one clue — word parts plus the sentence around the word.

WE DO

pre + order = preorder. pre- means before, so a preorder is an order made before the normal sale or release.

YOU TRY · MATCH THE FAIR WORD TO ITS MEANING

Need a clue?

pre- = before · mis- = wrongly · multi- = many · sub- = under or smaller within.

LIBRARY · MISSION 2 OF 7

Fair Briefing: Read for Evidence

Find the main idea, infer, and reject competing information.
WHAT AM I LEARNING?

I can combine clues and evidence to explain what a text means.

Teach: Year 5 texts do not always say everything directly. Strong readers combine details, infer what is meant, and notice information that is interesting but not important to the reading purpose.

School Fair Planning Brief

Last year, hundreds of people came to the school fair, but long queues formed around the food stalls. This year the organising team wants visitors to move around the grounds more easily. Food stalls will be split between two areas, and signs will point families towards games, performances and quieter spaces.

The fair opens at 10:00 am. Volunteers have been asked to arrive by 8:45 am because every stall must be checked before visitors enter. A local band will perform at midday, and the kapa haka group performs at 1:15 pm. One committee member has also ordered bright orange tablecloths because orange is her favourite colour.

Money raised will go towards shaded outdoor seating beside the library. The team hopes clearer signs and shorter queues will help visitors stay longer and enjoy more of the fair.

Need a clue?

Look for the sentence containing because. For the competing detail, ask: “Would the plan still make sense without this?”

WRITING STUDIO · MISSION 3 OF 7

Persuasive Fair Announcement

Shape language for an audience and purpose.
WHAT AM I LEARNING?

I can write for a clear audience and purpose, then improve my draft.

Teach: Audience and purpose affect what a writer includes, how a text is organised and which words are chosen. Persuasive writing gives the reader a reason to care and a clear action to take.

WE DO

Plain: “Come to the fair.” Stronger: “Bring your whānau, explore the stalls and help us create a cooler outdoor reading space.”

○ 60+ words○ clear reason○ useful fair details○ clear invitation
Need a clue?

Try this shape: Hook → important details → why it matters → invitation.

MATHS LAB · MISSION 4 OF 7

Big Number Control

Read, compare and round numbers up to 1,000,000.
WHAT AM I LEARNING?

I can use place value to compare and round large whole numbers.

Teach: In Year 5, place value extends to 1,000,000. Each place is ten times the value of the place to its right. For rounding, find the target place, then use the digit immediately to its right to decide whether to stay or round up.

WE DO

348,620 rounded to the nearest 10,000 is 350,000 because the thousands digit is 8.

PLACE VALUE

What is the value of 7 in 472,615?

COMPARE

Which number is greatest?

ROUND

Round 684,271 to the nearest 10,000.

ORDER

Which comes first from smallest to largest?

Need a clue?

Compare from the greatest place first: hundred-thousands, then ten-thousands, then thousands.

PLANNING LAB · MISSION 5 OF 7

Fundraiser Forecast

Use several operations to solve a real planning problem.
WHAT AM I LEARNING?

I can plan and solve a multi-step money problem.

Teach: Multi-step problems are easier when you decide what each number represents before calculating. Work out each source of income, combine them, then subtract the costs.

Fair forecast

1,275 tickets at $4 each

36 stall fees at $25 each

Total costs: $2,485

Need a clue?

1) 1,275 × 4. 2) 36 × 25. 3) Add both incomes, then subtract $2,485.

ARCADE · MISSION 6 OF 7
