TERM 3 · WEEK 3
Robot Engineering: Rescue Mission

Build your rescue robot, explain your choices, then guide it through Robot Rescue Run.
ENGLISH
Robot Word Lab
01 · Robot Word LabLet’s investigate the words for Robot Engineering: Rescue Mission. Look for what changes, then explain what you notice.
WHAT AM I LEARNING?
Use roots/base words, prefixes and suffixes to build and explain technical vocabulary.
Build and explain: recharge, movement, protective, detector.
Need help? See the steps
A suffix is an ending added to a word. -ful can mean “full of” or “having”, -less can mean “without”, and -est can show the most. A prefix is a word part added to the beginning of a word. It changes the word’s meaning.
- STEP 1Read or tap each word.
- STEP 2Look closely at the word part the mission is teaching.
- STEP 3Sort, build or compare the words.
- STEP 4Explain the pattern in your own words.
Power up the technical vocabulary
A morpheme is a word part that carries meaning. Tap where each word splits, then choose what the parts mean together.

Robot Specification Desk
02 · Specification DeskRead the Robot Engineering: Rescue Mission information first. Talk the idea through, then answer one small question at a time.
WHAT AM I LEARNING?
Identify how a technical description links named parts and features to their functions.
Read the Robot Ranger R4 specification. Identify the movement part, the adjustable feature, the heat-detecting part and a sentence that explains function rather than appearance.
Need help? See the steps
Start with the steps below. They show you what to look for and what to do.
- STEP 1Read once to understand what it is mostly about.
- STEP 2Read the question again and find the part that helps.
- STEP 3Say your answer aloud using because, then check it against the text.
- STEP 4Record a useful clue from the source.
- STEP 5Explain what that clue tells you.
Read how parts and functions work together
Moves the robot over rough ground and controls forward, backward and turning movement.
Extends and retracts so the reach can be adjusted for different rescue jobs.
Detects heat so the operator can search for warm people or animals when visibility is poor.
Carries small first-aid supplies, water and emergency equipment.
Remember: a technical description explains what a part does, not only what it looks like.
Which part controls how the robot moves?
Choose the best evidence from the specification.Which feature makes the arm adjustable?
Choose the best evidence from the specification.Which part helps find a warm person in low visibility?

Build Your Rescue Bot
03 · Design BayThis is your real-world Robot Engineering: Rescue Mission challenge. Work out what the problem asks you to find or make.
WHAT AM I LEARNING?
Build a purposeful rescue robot by choosing a body, movement system, sensor and rescue tool, then testing and improving it for the rescue mission.
Tap a body, movement system, sensor and tool to build your robot. Deploy it in the science-lab training mission, use the feedback to improve its parts, and try again. You may give it a name.
Need help? See the steps
Your purpose is why you are writing.
- STEP 1Read the whole challenge once.
- STEP 2Find the numbers, facts or rules you need.
- STEP 3Choose a useful strategy.
- STEP 4Show your solution clearly enough that someone else could follow it.
Build your rescue robot
Tap parts to build your robot. Watch each new part appear, then send your robot on the rescue mission.
Smoke is filling the science lab
A small paper fire is burning away from electrical equipment. A fallen box and scattered debris are blocking part of the safest route. Build a robot that can travel across debris, find heat through smoke and control the fire.
Choose a body
How should your robot travel?
How should your robot detect danger?
What should your robot use to help?
Swap any part above to improve your design.
MATHS
Robot Geometry Lab
04 · Geometry LabWork through one maths question at a time. Your answers will be checked before the next mission unlocks.
WHAT AM I LEARNING?
Identify and describe polygons and line symmetry, then recognise and describe translation, reflection and rotation.
Complete the robot engineering tests: classify polygons by side and vertex count; identify lines of symmetry in a square and non-square rectangle; identify a slide as translation, a flip as reflection and a quarter-turn as a 90° rotation.
Need help? See the steps
Start with the steps below. They show you what to look for and what to do.
- STEP 1Read the question and decide what you need to find.
- STEP 2Notice the important numbers and units.
- STEP 3Choose a strategy and work it out.
- STEP 4Type the answer, then check that it makes sense.
Test shapes, symmetry and transformations
A closed 2D shape made from straight sides. Count sides and vertices carefully.
A line of symmetry divides a shape into matching mirror halves.
Translation = slide. Rotation = turn. Reflection = flip.
A shield panel has 6 straight sides. What polygon is it?
System not tested yet.Which polygon has 5 sides and 5 vertices?
System not tested yet.How many lines of symmetry does a square have?
System not tested yet.How many lines of symmetry does a non-square rectangle have?
System not tested yet.The robot slides 3 squares right without turning. What transformation is that?
System not tested yet.A scanner shape is flipped across a mirror line. What transformation is that?
System not tested yet.The robot makes a quarter-turn clockwise. How many degrees is the turn?
System not tested yet.ENGLISH
Robot Technical File
05 · Technical FileYOUR WRITING JOB: Use the rescue robot you built. Write two organised paragraphs: first explain its name, purpose and rescue job; then explain how at least three parts function. Use precise technical vocabulary and function language such as 'is used to', 'helps', 'allows' or 'because'.
WHAT AM I LEARNING?
Write an informative technical description that explains a designed object's purpose, parts and functions using precise vocabulary.
Use the rescue robot you built. Write two organised paragraphs: first explain its name, purpose and rescue job; then explain how at least three parts function. Use precise technical vocabulary and function language such as 'is used to', 'helps', 'allows' or 'because'.
Need help? See the steps
A cause is why something happens. An effect is what happens because of it. Your purpose is why you are writing. First get your ideas ready. Then build the writing one part at a time.
- STEP 1Introduce what you are writing about.
- STEP 2Give your first important idea.
- STEP 3Add another useful detail, reason or example.
- STEP 4Finish so the reader understands your message.
Explain how your rescue robot works
This is your working engineering sheet. The robot you built appears here, and you explain how the chosen systems help with a rescue problem.
Build and deploy your robot so its parts appear here.
Name your robot. Explain the rescue job it was designed to do and who or what it helps.
Explain how at least three parts work. Tap your part-name chips if you want to insert the exact technical vocabulary.

WHAT AM I LEARNING?
Reflect on using word parts, technical descriptions, geometry and transformations to design and explain a rescue robot.
