READ & UNDERSTAND

Reading detective

The school fair team must choose between two stalls. A fruit stall costs $125 to run and could earn $210. A craft stall costs $160 and could earn $220. The team cannot pick only by how much money comes in: they must compare the costs, likely profit, workload and fairness. They write their reasons and ask others for feedback before making a decision.

Why is the largest amount of money earned not enough to decide?

WRITE & IMPROVE

Writing studio

Recommend one stall. Give a money reason and one other reason.

Plan one idea, explain it and check that your sentences make sense. You can edit your writing.

TRY THE EXAMPLE FIRST

Maths mission

Profit means money earned minus cost. $210 − $125 = $85 profit.

APPLY YOUR LEARNING

Real-world mission

Make a simple two-column comparison table showing cost, income and profit for both stalls.

You can also draw or make the activity away from the screen. Record what you did or what you would make.

SKILL GAME · TAKE YOUR TIME

Challenge gate

Use what you learnt to unlock the gate. There's no timer. Mistakes help you find what to try again.

Which stall has the higher expected profit?
