YEAR 5 · TERM 3 · WEEK 9
Engineering a Safe Bridge
Read, think, write, solve and play. Try your own answer before checking. You can have another go.
LEARN & PRACTISE
Word explorer
Read each word. Look for parts you know. Type each word to practise its spelling.
READ & UNDERSTAND
Reading detective
A team builds small paper bridges across a gap between two books. Their first bridge bends under three counters. They add a folded support and try again using the same number of counters. The teacher reminds them to change one feature at a time so the result can be compared fairly. Real bridges require qualified engineers.
WRITE & IMPROVE
Writing studio
Write a design report identifying the problem, your change and the test result.
Plan one idea, explain it and check that your sentences make sense. You can edit your writing.
TRY THE EXAMPLE FIRST
Maths mission
A bridge holds 24 counters in 3 equal sections, which is 8 counters per section.
APPLY YOUR LEARNING
Real-world mission
Build a small paper bridge between books using safe materials. Record the number of counters it holds.
You can also draw or make the activity away from the screen. Record what you did or what you would make.
SKILL GAME · TAKE YOUR TIME
Challenge gate
Use what you learnt to unlock the gate. There's no timer. Mistakes help you find what to try again.
LOOK BACK
How did you go?
Choose what feels right. This isn't a test and there is no wrong answer.
Ka rawe — your learning is saved!
You can return to any activity to improve your work.
